The Bicolanos often call the Pili as the 'Tree of Hope', because every part of the pili can be produced into something useful. From food manufacturing up to handicraft material making, pili can be processed and utilized into anything that you can imagine.
The primary root of Pili normally goes straight down, before growing secondary roots which spread, making it firmly anchored to the ground, and highly typhoon-resistant. In fact, it can be made into a perimeter wall to serve as windbreakers for less sturdy plants. Because of this characteristic, this plant was chosen by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for the National Greening Program in Bicol.
